Nancy Flournoy is University of Missouri Curators’ Distinguished Professor of Statistics with expertise in adaptive experimental design. She is Fellow of World Academy of Art and Science, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Statistical Association, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and the Washington Academy of Science. She is President-elect of the Caucus of Women in Statistics. Flournoy spent 15 years as Director of Clinical Statistics at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and 2 years as Statistics Program Director at the United States National Science Foundation. Following 16 years at American University, she served ten years as statistics department chair at the University of Missouri. Visiting positions include Fellow of the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Cambridge, UK during their 2011 program on Design and Analysis of Experiments. Flournoy’s honors include the Janet L. Norwood award, the Elizabeth Scott award and the F.N. David award.

Countries and international organizations rely upon the scientific method in constructing laws, regulations and treaty agreements. We describe how the scientific method has been corrupted by thoughtlessly following a historical prescription that is reinforced by stakeholders with large financial interests.
