Dr. Antonio Machado is the Director of the Granadilla Environmental Observatory, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, which is a state foundation for monitoring marine environment and biodiversity, and following-up environmental impact of large marine infrastructure. This organization, under his leadership, has promoted numerous studies of the rich flora and fauna of the Canaries. He is the author or co-author of a large number of books, scientific and technical articles, and projects. Dr. Machado is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal for Nature Conservation, and has published cutting-edge scientific results from all parts of the world. He has provided advice on nature conservation issues in many countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and Oceania. He is a globally recognized leader in nature conservation. His activities cut across biology, public policy and the humanities. He is involved in promoting the study of the Canarian version of Spanish. Dr. Machado has served as the Regional Councillor in Western Europe for the International Union for Conservation of Nature at Gland, Switzerland, as the Director of the Institutional Office of the Canary Islands Government at Madrid, Spain, and as the President of the European Centre for Nature Conservation, Tilburg, The Netherlands. From 2000-2009, he was an Associate Professor of General Ecology and Nature Conservation at the University of La Laguna.
